ERNIE AND ERNESTINA: Searching
Book Two, Chapter 262: Orderly/Disorderly
I revise a chapter I first wrote a year ago which contains this sentence: I remember, from way back, Ernie’s slender fingers methodically removing strands of my light hair wrapped around a bar of soap.
This points out a big difference between Ernie and me: he was fond of order, and I tend to be disorderly. Strands of hair wound around a bar of soap? I didn’t even notice the strands of hair. The me I was back then watched him unravel the hair and thought to herself: I guess I’d better start doing that, too.
These days I remove strands of hair — no longer blonde — from my lavender-scented soap. I’m learning to be more methodical. Of course I’m also learning to think and to write, with Ernie as my guide.
